Dalai Lama’s envoys travel to China for new round of talks

New Delhi – Envoys of the Dalai Lama will arrive in China for a new round of talks on Tuesday to resume a dialogue stalled for nearly 15 months, the Tibetan government-in-exile said.

Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen will be accompanied by three senior Tibetan officials, the spiritual leader’s secretary Chimme Chhoekyapa said in a statement.

‘The envoys will arrive in China tomorrow for discussions with the representatives of the Chinese leadership. This is the ninth round of dialogue. The envoys are visiting China after a gap of 15 months in the process that began in 2002,’ Chhoekyapa said.

Preparations for the talks in Beijing were finalized in a meeting chaired by Samdhong Rinpoche, the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile. The delegation is expected to return to India at the beginning of next month.

Chinese and Tibetan officials have held eight rounds of talks so far but little tangible progress has been made.

The last round of discussions in November 2008 ended with Beijing saying that ’serious differences’ remained.

Tibetan envoys said China had shown that it had no interest in a serious solution to the question of Tibet’s status.

Beijing accused the Dalai Lama of supporting anti-Chinese riots in 2008 and demanded proof that he does not support Tibetan independence.

The 74-year-old Dalai Lama has publicly adopted a ‘middle-way’ approach, renouncing independence in favour of ‘meaningful autonomy’ for Tibet.
