Using condom during sex and getting medical checkup for infection are key to prevent HIV/AIDS

Dharamsala: Tibetans in Dharamsala today organised painting competition and marathon to educate people about the HIV/AIDS and promote awareness to continue the fight against the disease. 1 December is celebrated as the World AIDS Day.
Today’s awareness programme was jointly organised by the department of health of the Central Tibetan Administration and Choice, a Dharamsala-based NGO involved in educating the Tibetan community in exile in combating HIV/AIDS.
Health Kalon Paljor Tsering issued a statement which focuses on different ways through which the HIV infection spreads and some of the key preventive measures.
To prevent acquiring the infected virus through blood transmission during emergency cases, one should try to get blood from uninfected persons or get the donor checked, Kalon Paljor Tsering said.
He underlined the need to stop sharing needles or syringes used by drug addicts.
He reiterated that the one of the major cause of HIV/AIDS is sex without a condom with someone living with HIV.
He emphasised the need to use condom during sex or to avoid sex with unknown persons.
A HIV/AIDS infected individual has the moral responsibility not to pass on the infection to others, he said.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme of ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’, highlights the critical link between universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support and respect for human rights in the response to the global AIDS epidemic. Without addressing human rights abuses, many of the populations most vulnerable to or living with HIV will lack access to prevention and treatment services.
Kalon Paljor Tsering urged the HIV/AIDS infected persons to get regular medicines through the Tibetan health centres to check the disease from getting worse and prevent deterioration of physical health.
He spoke on the effectiveness of the Tibetan medicines in combating the HIV/AIDS.

In his address, acting health secretary Sonam Choephel Shosur said the cases of HIV/AIDS in the Tibetan community is very low, adding that this should not let Tibetans feel complacent and called for renewed awareness to prevent the epidemic.
Tenzin Choezom, Miss Tibet 2009, as the special guest emphasised to stop discrimination against people living with HIV.
The World Health Organisation yesterday issued new guidance advising doctors to start giving patients AIDS drugs a year or two earlier than usual. The advice could double the number of people worldwide who qualify for treatment, adding an extra 3 to 5 million patients to the 5 million already awaiting AIDS drugs.
